Iconic Coherence. From the Heir of the Kankurang in Senegal and Gambia

Increasingly, orally transmitted heritage is inherited by means of images – so that these visualizations become a structural feature of societies themselves. Using the Kankurang initiation rite of the Mandinka, which was declared an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2008 by the states of Senegal and The Gambia, the work not only sheds light on the question of the characteristics of these structures – but also how they manifest themselves.

Through discourse and image-analytical procedures, the “how? of heritage constitution is questioned. Which conceptions of historicity are created here? With which spatial conceptions are these linked? These spatiotemporal arrangements of heritage have the potential to overcome old stereotypes and biases towards West African societies. For here the complexity and simultaneity of multiple spatiotemporal constitutions-previously constructed as spatially and temporally one-dimensional-become apparent.

Through these insights from the empirical-visual material, a third mode for memory research can be coined – iconic coherence. This mode offers the possibility beyond Eurocentric dualisms to broaden the perspective by the complexity of spatiotemporal constitutions of heritage in visualizations. The iconic coherence of the numeous museumized Kankurang shows the possibility of contingency management through and of the visual in Senegambian contemporary society.
