Annemarie Schwarzenbach’s Pictorial Reports from Northern Europe 1937-38. Journalistic Travel Photography and Political Aesthetics of the Documentary

The dissertation examines the photographic work of Annemarie Schwarzenbach (1908-1942), the Swiss journalist, writer, and historian, in the context of her reportage travels in the years 1937-38. The object of consideration is the pictorial reports published in the Swiss press. The connection between photography and multiple processes of political discursivation of the picture reports in the context of National Socialism forms the focus of analysis. The work engages with theoretical research on documentary photography as well as the discursive relations between nation-state image rhetorics and photographic image production. The research project is situated within the disciplines of art history, critical theory, image studies, and the theory and history of photography.
