August Lehrmann. Architecture and Urban Planning of the Weimarian Head of the Municipal Planning and Building Control Office 1909-1945

The promotion project examines the urban planning and architectural development of Weimar based on the work of August Lehrmann (1878-1945), who worked there from 1909 to 1937 as head of the municipal building authority. The thesis, as an iconography of architecture, focuses (contrary to an established personal narrative of the city’s history) on the buildings as a source, which are still there but largely unnoticed. The study is supplemented by an extensive stock of written documents and plan material in the city archive and the main state archive of Weimar. The central question is what architectural manifestation of urban identity Weimar received, whose historical importance is shaped by intellectual history and history of ideas. The municipal building office under Lehrmann existed over three political systems and thus represents a constant that enabled the realisation of extensive building projects such as the so-called „Cultural-Project“ (1910-1932). The macrosocial processes of negotiation also shaped the discourse on the design of public spaces and the cityscape, which was essentially about how to deal with the existing heritage. Lehrmann’s own claim to “bring Weimar’s architectural development over the dangerous cliffs of modern artistic views and influences without being considered backward” (1928) can be understood as an effective attempt to construct urban identity. The cultural heritage should be reconciled with the necessary modernisations and the inevitable mass housing construction without damaging the historic-cultural character of Weimar permanently.
The research project is interested in the question of contradictions, continuities und a stylistic localization of his work, especially with a critical view on vernacular architecture/homeland architecture. In addition, it is necessary to examine the constellations of actors in the local instances and the communal political influence of Lehrmann, because he was active in different of municipal authorities such as the building police and also engaged in oppositional activities against the historical Bauhaus. For this reason, a potential political conviction of Lehrmann must be reflected. The research project, designed as a basic work, is intended to trace Lehrmann’s architectural work in Weimar and to sensitize for his neglected legacy in order to stimulate reflection on how to deal with it in the future.
